This Friday, September 16, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models will start shipping to customers and will go on sale.
Ahead of time, a few media outlets and YouTube channels have already released their initial reviews of the handsets.
What’s New?
An always-on display with a new Dynamic Island, improved cameras with a 48-megapixel main lens, car crash detection, and satellite connectivity for emergencies.
The A16 Bionic chip for faster performance, and new Deep Purple and Space Black color options are some of the major new features of the iPhone 14 Pro models.
The feature was not yet ready for review because Emergency SOS via Satellite is not set to deploy until November.
The 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch displays, battery life, and weight of the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, which have identical camera systems once again this year, are the only changes between the two models.
The iPhone 14 Pro versions have both written and video reviews that we’ve compiled below, along with a feature-by-feature breakdown.
Dynamic Island
Dynamic Island, which is exclusive to the iPhone 14 Pro models, takes the place of the conventional notch seen on all iPhone 13 models.
The cutout changes size and shapes with the use of software to display information such as incoming calls, alarms, notifications, Face ID verification, timers, turn-by-turn directions, Live Activities, and more.
What’s More?
Although Dynamic Island is undoubtedly more helpful than the notch on older iPhones, Nilay Patel of The Verge claimed that the feature’s potential has not yet been fully realized because no third-party apps have been developed to support Dynamic Island as of launch.
Dynamic Island will be supported by third-party apps once the Live Activities functionality is released later this year.
The Dynamic Island feels like one of those things that need a year of development and developer focus before we truly understand its significance, according to Patel.
Continuous Display
Jacob Krol of TheStreet reported that during his tests, the new always-on display on the iPhone 14 Pro did not significantly affect battery life:
Additionally, based on my preliminary tests, having the always-on display had no detrimental effects on the 14 Pro or 14 Pro Max’s battery life or overall runtime.
The larger in size — and certainly in battery capacity — 14 Pro Max lasted for a day and a half with the same use, but the 14 Pro still allowed me to get a full day’s worth of moderate use.
Apple singled out a few improvements in the new A16 Bionic, which features cores made to operate the display well.
Camera With 48 Megapixels
Raymond Wong from Input put the iPhone’s new 48-megapixel main lens to the test and was impressed with the 48-megapixel ProRAW photographs.
He claimed he could not see the difference between pixel-binned 12-megapixel photos and 48-megapixel photos in the daytime.
I’ve tested a lot of Android phones with high-megapixel cameras, and they’ve never quite lived up to my expectations.
Apple’s ProRAW DNG for the iPhone 13 Pro and 12 Pro was a little underwhelming; a 12-megapixel RAW image only offers marginally more detail than a 12-megapixel JPEG.
This is not the case with 48-megapixel ProRAW files, which have enormous photos (sometimes weighing in over 70–80MB) and insanely high levels of detail for a phone.
Numerous images taken with the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max are included in Wong’s review.
Colors Of Space Black And Deep Purple
Wong added some commentary on the fresh Deep Purple and Space Black color schemes:
I have a Space Black iPhone 14 Pro review unit. My favorite. Like a cross between the black and Jet Black iPhone 7, the stainless steel frame and glass back are substantially darker than the grey iPhone 13 Pro’s Graphite color.
Deep Purple is the color of my iPhone 14 Pro Max review unit; it’s a deep purple that can occasionally appear grey or black.
Both nevertheless attract fingerprints despite having a slick appearance in person. They are also available in silver and gold.
Bionic Chip A16
In comparison to the 13 Pro, Wong’s Geekbench 5 findings for the iPhone 14 Pro models showed up to a 16% boost in multi-core performance.
– iPhone 12 Pro: (A14 Bionic): 1,586 single-core / 3,937 multi-core
– iPhone 13 Pro: (A15 Bionic): 1,725 / 4,722
– iPhone 14 Pro: (A16 Bionic): 1,875 / 5,495
Battery’s Life
Joanna Stern of The Wall Street Journal said that the battery life of iPhone 14 Pro devices was not noticeably better than that of iPhone 13 Pro models.
None of the iPhone 14 or 14 Pro models I tested had a battery life that was noticeably longer than that of their forerunners.
With the step-up model, the iPhone 14 Plus, the situation might be different. I’ll check Apple’s claim that it has “our longest battery life ever” whenever it arrives.
