According to a screenshot released by reverse engineer Jane Manchun Wong, Twitter is working on creating a podcast tab. A microphone symbol appears in the Twitter app’s bottom navigation bar, leading to a page titled “Podcasts,” according to the image.
The screenshot doesn’t reveal how podcasts would be shown on the site or if Spaces, the company’s audio-only chatrooms, will be included in any way. Live Spaces are now crammed at the top of Twitter feeds, and it would make sense to divide them into their own tab.
What’s New in Podcasts Tab Could?
When Twitter initially introduced Spaces in 2020, it began branching out into audio, and with the acquisition of social podcast company Breaker, it went even deeper into the medium. The platform’s continuing Spaces project recently began allowing anyone to host chatrooms and allowing all mobile users to record discussions.
Digging In More Details
Recorded Spaces are already akin to podcasts, albeit only for a limited time, lasting only 30 days. Users would be able to choose and listen to podcasts at their leisure, rather than being rushed to catch a live Spaces broadcast or listen to recordings before time runs out if a Twitter podcast option is anything like Spotify or Apple Podcasts.
As social media networks seek to expand their capabilities in order to generate more cash, Twitter is the latest to consider launching a podcasting division. Facebook introduced a podcast feature for select producers last year, and Reddit also enabled recording for its audio-only Talks. The Verge reached out to Twitter for comment but did not receive a response right away.
